Radar detector installation at a glance

Why have a radar detector installed?

Most radar detectors ship with a suction-cup mount and a cord that plugs into the 12V socket. It works, but the cord hangs across the dash, the socket is tied up, and the detector is in plain view for anyone looking into the car. A professional install fixes that.

Hardwired windshield mount

We run power to the detector from a fused circuit and hide the wire behind the headliner and trim. Many installs use a mirror-mount or a dedicated power cord so the detector turns on and off with the vehicle. You keep the detector’s display and controls where you can see them, without the clutter.

Remote-mount (hidden) systems

A remote-mount system puts the radar antenna behind the grille or bumper, out of sight, with a small display or alert module inside the cabin. Nothing sits on the windshield, so the vehicle keeps a clean factory look and the detector isn’t an invitation to a break-in. Remote installs take more planning around sensors, wiring and bumper access, which is why they are best left to an installer. Ask us whether a remote-mount setup is right for your vehicle.

What a radar detector does (and doesn’t do)

A radar detector is a receiver. It listens for police radar bands (X, K and Ka) and alerts you when it picks them up. Many modern detectors add GPS-based features such as filtering known false alerts and remembering locations. A detector does not block or interfere with police radar.

Radar jammers are different and are illegal. Devices that transmit radar signals to interfere with police radar are prohibited nationwide by the FCC. CoaterZ does not sell or install radar jammers.

Is a radar detector legal in Florida?

Yes. Florida allows radar detectors in private passenger vehicles. A few rules are worth knowing if you travel:

Laws change, so check the rules where you plan to drive. Our blog covers radar detector laws in more depth.

Radar and laser protection together

Police use radar and laser (lidar) to measure speed. A radar detector alerts you to radar, but by the time a detector sees a laser signal, your speed has usually already been measured. That is why many drivers pair a detector with a laser jammer. We can plan and install both in one visit so the wiring, display and alerts work together.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I get a radar detector installed near Tampa?

CoaterZ installs radar detectors at our Palm Harbor, Lutz and Sarasota shops. The Lutz shop at 16235 N Florida Ave is the closest to Tampa; call (813) 467-8149. Palm Harbor is (727) 935-4621 and Sarasota is (941) 297-0125.

Are radar detectors legal in Florida?

Yes. Radar detectors are legal in private passenger vehicles in Florida. They are illegal in Virginia and Washington, D.C., and in commercial vehicles over 10,000 lbs under federal rules.

What is the difference between a hardwired and a remote-mount radar detector?

A hardwired install keeps the detector on the windshield but hides the power cord and powers it from the vehicle. A remote-mount install hides the radar antenna behind the grille or bumper and uses a small in-cabin display, so nothing is visible on the windshield.

Will a radar detector stop me from getting a ticket?

No device can guarantee that. A radar detector gives you an early warning when police radar is in use. It does not block radar, and it is not a substitute for driving at a safe, legal speed.

Do you install radar jammers?

No. Radar jammers are illegal under federal FCC rules. We install radar detectors, which only receive signals, and laser jammers where they are legal.

Can you install a radar detector in a Tesla or other EV?

Yes. CoaterZ works on Teslas and other EVs, and a clean hardwired install keeps the minimalist interior uncluttered. Tell us your model when you request a quote.
