Quick answer: CoaterZ installs laser jammers (also called lidar jammers or laser shifters) at our Palm Harbor, Lutz and Sarasota shops in the Tampa Bay area, using Genevo laser systems. Florida does not prohibit laser jammers in private passenger vehicles, but several other states and Washington, D.C. do. Radar jammers are illegal everywhere in the U.S. and we don’t install them. Laser jammer installation at a glance

How laser jammers work

Police lidar guns measure speed by firing short pulses of infrared light at a vehicle and timing the reflections. A laser jammer uses small sensor heads on the front of the vehicle (and sometimes the rear) to detect those pulses and alert you. A laser signal is narrow and fast, so a radar detector alone usually warns you too late, after your speed has already been measured. That is why drivers who want laser protection add a dedicated laser system.

Why installation matters

A laser system is only as good as its install. The sensor heads need to be mounted at the right height, spacing and angle, with a clear view forward. Plates, grille shapes, parking sensors, front cameras and driver-assist systems all affect where heads can go. Wiring runs from the heads through the firewall to a control module and an in-cabin alert, and it needs to be routed and protected properly.

At CoaterZ we plan the mounting positions for your specific vehicle, keep the heads as discreet as possible, route and secure the wiring, and test the system before you pick it up. We take care around your bumper, grille, sensors and factory electronics.

Are laser jammers legal in Florida?

Florida does not currently prohibit laser jammers in private passenger vehicles. Laws are different elsewhere:

If you drive across state lines, check the rules for every state on your route. Laws change, so confirm current rules before you travel.

Radar detector + laser jammer packages

Most drivers who want full coverage pair a laser system with a radar detector. Installing both at the same visit lets us plan the wiring, displays and alerts together, so you get one clean setup instead of two separate projects.

Protect the front end while you’re at it

Laser sensor heads sit on the front of the vehicle, the same area that takes rock chips on Florida highways. Many customers add paint protection film or a ceramic coating at the same time. See our other accessories and dash cam installation.

Frequently asked questions

Are laser jammers legal in Florida?

Florida does not currently prohibit laser jammers in private passenger vehicles. They are banned in several other states, including California, Texas, Illinois and Virginia, and in Washington, D.C. Radar jammers are illegal nationwide.

What is the difference between a laser jammer and a radar jammer?

A laser jammer responds to police lidar, which uses infrared light. A radar jammer transmits radio signals to interfere with police radar. Radar jammers are illegal under federal FCC rules and CoaterZ does not install them.

Can’t my radar detector handle laser?

Most radar detectors can alert to laser, but a lidar beam is narrow and fast, so the alert usually arrives after your speed has been measured. A dedicated laser system is designed to respond to lidar directly.

Where are the sensors mounted?

Sensor heads are usually mounted in the lower grille or bumper area, facing forward, and sometimes on the rear. Exact placement depends on your vehicle’s shape, plate location and factory sensors.
